Partner Story: Qualisys has their eye firmly on quality clinical gait analysis

At HAS-Motion we believe that a person’s movement reflects their health and their capacity to achieve their dreams. Many people around the world are similarly dedicated to using motion capture tools in clinical settings. Despite great strides, high barriers to adoption have historically limited the availability of clinical gait analysis. These barriers include the expertise required to manage motion capture systems and the time required for marker-based tracking. But we look forward to a future where gait analysis is easily accessible in hospitals and clinics around the world.

Getting there will take a lot of effort, which is why we’re happy to work with partners like Qualisys. You may already know Qualisys for their cameras, multi-vendor integrations, and Project Automation Framework (PAF) for custom analysis modules. But did you know that Qualisys bundles a subset of its hardware and software as the Qualisys Clinical System?

Dependable Equipment, Streamlined Workflows

Gait analysis requires dependable equipment and efficient workflows in any setting to have an impact in the real world. This is doubly so when your goal is to diagnose or assess patients. More than just a name, the Qualisys Clinical System has approval as a Class 1m medical device in Europe. In North America it holds FDA clearance in the United States. This means it meets regulatory requirements relating to the:

  • design;
  • use;
  • risk; and
  • performance of the device

while also demonstrating clinical relevance and safety across the lifecycle. No small task.

Qualisys’s Clinical System meets these many demands while providing users with the option to customize. This includes flexibility in marker sets for marker-based tracking and multiple hardware integrations (including EMG and force plates). The Clinical System also includes the Clinical Gait Analysis module which integrates tightly with Visual3D for its extensive biomechanical toolbox. Earlier this year Qualisys announced the release of the Clinical Gait Analysis module v.2.1.7, which includes:

  • broad support for the conventional gait model; and
  • flexible reporting options.
Qualisys's Clinical Gait Analysis module is responsible for data management and report generation. It integreates with the Qualisys Track Manager (responsible for camera settings and calibration) and Visual3D (responsible for data processing and results verification) to produce these reports.
The Clinical Gait Analysis module integrates with the Qualisys Track Manager and Visual3D to produce reports supporting decision-making.

“At Qualisys, we are proud of our longstanding partnership with the HAS-Motion team,” said Nils Betzler, Life Science Product Manager at Qualisys, “Integrating Visual3D into our Clinical Gait Module gives our users the power of one of the world’s most trusted biomechanics software suites whilst maintaining the efficiency and standardization that is required in gait analysis.”

Transparent and Reproducible Analysis

We are incredibly happy at HAS-Motion to continue C-Motion’s longstanding relationship with Qualisys. In particular we are committed to Visual3D continuing its role as a key part of the Clinical Gait Analysis module.

Visual3D’s flexible modelling feature allows it to seamlessly support any desired marker set, including the IOR Gait Full Body Model shown here.

Visual3D is a product that came out of the National Institutes of Health’s call for the biomechanics community to deliver meaningful, quantitative measures of impairments, disabilities, and handicaps, and of the outcomes of medical interventions,” said Scott Selbie, CEO of HAS-Motion. “This focus on supporting clinical decision-making has really informed Visual3D’s core philosophies of making biomechanical analysis transparent and entirely reproducible.”

HAS-Motion has also developed Sift with the idea of streamlined workflows in mind. Sift’s focus has been to make the scale-up of biomechanical data manageable for researchers and clinicians, with features like an efficient console application for batch processing, directory watchers to trigger analysis, and normal database representations for large data sets.

Looking Forward for Clinical Gait Analysis

Partnerships like the one between HAS-Motion and Qualisys are necessary to build efficient and effective clinical solutions. The Clinical Gait Analysis module’s latest release is just one step in a long partnership with many more to come. HAS-Motion remains committed to Visual3D and Sift being easy-to-integrate with solutions like Qualisys’s Clinical System. At the end of the day we want to support users who are pushing clinical gait analysis forward.
